The follow-up album to their fantastic Eyelid Movies album isn't as uniformly scintillating, but one song that I really love is "Don't Move." Clearly about living with someone who is dealing with substance abuse, it's heartbreaking that the verse melodies are these long, beautiful phrases, but very controlled and composed. It's the calm required when trying to get through to someone in the blindness of addiction, who can seem to search for any hint of an attack to react against.
I love the drum pattern, especially in the second verse when it compresses in sound and changes to a straight beat, except the kick drum on syncopated beats, hiccuping after the snare. The synths offer a fantastic triplet counterpoint.
The synth bass is doing so much to elevate this song all over, but it really is featured in the middle bridge, with its cool little scales.
When you're done listening to these fantastic foundational elements, just relax your ears and pick out all the other fantastic sounds happening: The typically ghostly Phantogram guitar pattern and the synth textures and samples of many kinds.
Sometimes I have to forget listening critically at all and take in this fantastic song all at once as a dreamy, dancing whole.
