This work of pure pop art was recorded right here in my town of Minneapolis, Minnesota, while I was an 8-year-old living in Bismarck, North Dakota, missing out on all that greatness.
Minneapolis in the '80s: Prince motoring around, pioneering the musical Minneapolis Sound. Janet Jackson seeking out the city and its producers to inspire her landmark Rhythm Nation album. Kirby Puckett and the Twins winning the World Series. This city, beautiful as it is, really is still living off the highs of that time.
We may never need to produce music more iconic than Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation, but you'd think we could win a few more titles eventually, just to kick off a little dust.
Anyway, so much joy in this song. So many fantastic ideas. One big, big beat. That main organ part is just the challenging type of funky oddness that typifies that Minneapolis Sound.
Janet Jackson still makes a point to shout "Minneapolis" in this song and many others every time she performs here. We all have fond memories.
